Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria’s Statement on the U.S. Senate Passing Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill”

MERCED, CA – Today, Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Senate passing the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” the Trump-backed federal budget proposal that includes severe cuts to Medicare.

“Yesterday’s passage of the Trump-backed budget bill in the U.S. Senate represents a direct threat to seniors in California and across the nation. By gutting Medicare and significantly reducing healthcare funding, this bill unfairly targets seniors who have spent their entire lives paying into a system they were promised would protect their health and security.

In stark contrast, here in California, this week we finalized a state budget that rejects reckless healthcare cuts, fully protects critical services such as Medi-Cal and homecare, and strengthens support for California’s seniors and most vulnerable populations.

As the representative of Madera, Merced, and Fresno Counties—a region where healthcare access is already limited — this federal bill is deeply alarming. Over 60 percent of my constituents rely on Medi-Cal and Medicare to stay healthy. Cutting these programs means jeopardizing their health, their financial stability, and their peace of mind.

California is choosing to invest in our seniors and protect essential healthcare services. Washington should follow our lead. I call on leaders in Congress to reject this damaging bill and stand up for the millions of Americans counting on Medicare for their well-being.”
